Geography of the U.S.
7th Grade Social Studies

Objectives:
Using the State Performance Indicator 7.3.spi.1. The student should be able to, at this time, identify and use the basic elements of maps and mapping. Using this lesson will address three of the ISTE NETS-S standards including: Creativity and Innovation, Communication and Collaboration, and Research and Information Fluency.

Materials Used:
Textbook: World Cultures and Geography, McDougal Littell
Interactive Review Website www.ClassZone.com that accompanies the book.
www.google.com or www.ask.com

Procedures:
Before class preparation: I will use a computer lab for this assignment so I will have to ok it with other teachers so that they aren’t going to the lab at the same time. Also, I will have to make sure that there is an IWB to use the companion website for the textbook. The homework the night before would be to read over the material for today’s class so that they are prepared and we don’t have to spend any more time in the computer lab than need be.
During class:
  • I will divide them into groups of 3 or 4 and they will be told to come up with their own questions based on what they remember reading.
  • Using www.google.com and www.ask.com (one computer to each team), they will find the answers for the questions that they came up with.
  • We will then, have a class discussion on their findings and reflections on the material. We will use the IWB to reinforce what they have learned using the textbook companion website at www.ClassZone.com; an interactive map of geographic locations and landmarks of the United States. This will give them more interaction with each other because they have to use the pen to point at certain areas when a question is asked about its location.
  • Scaffolds include monitoring the students’ progress by walking around the room listening and asking individual questions on the topic that each team is discussing at the time. Also, the group discussion and interaction at the end of the lesson.
Back-up Plan: If the technology fails by the computers not letting students online, then they can always reference the textbook for their answers and if it fails by the IWB not working for the interactive website we can always pull out an old-fashioned land map and identify the geographic areas that way.

Assessment:

Modifications:
I have two students with learning disabilities. One has a vision impairment and needs a special magnifier for his computer so I have to make sure that one is available for him in that particular lab. For the other one, I have to make sure that she has an adjustable chair so that she can reach the keyboard to type correctly while participating in the group activity on the internet. I want everyone to be involved in finding the answers to their questions.
